New "Trad" Window Treatments

"New traditional" generally means using traditional methods and materials, but adapting them to today's styles. In this recent project, I topped off a white balloon shade in the bedroom with blue-gray French damask by Pierre Frey and scalloped it in a valance with contrasting mint moire fabric. The result is a top treatment that complements the colors in the floral wallpaper without competing with its pattern.

In the dining area, I layered light-filtering creamy sheers over blush and cream plaid roman shades, both featuring feminine French pleat bottom edge details. A painted wood cornice tops everything off to create a more seamless look with the ceiling and walls and hides hardware.

In the end, this unusual approach to layering sheers and roman shades results in a muted and softened atmosphere in the room. At night, the twinkling lights from the overhead chandelier are warmer and conversation tempered by the enveloping fabrics.
